BIG UPDATE

Greeting y'all. While I've pondered and prayed about the future of this blog, I think I've come up with some interesting ideas for blog series. These are described below:

1. History Lesson - This is the series I am most excited about as I am not the one writing it. I am happy to announce that we have a new contributor! Austin Sprinkles, a law student at UK with a college degree in history, will be the lead contributor in this series.

2. Theology Thursday - One Thursday a month, I will be discussing a common or misunderstood theology concept. We should seek to understand these concepts as they are the basis for all doctrines. That being said, I will also be exploring some more obscure theological concepts so that we can sympathize with other denominations as well and be able to understand why they worship the way that they do.

3. Highlighted Hymn - We will be highlighting one classic hymn a month, exploring the inspiration and meanings in the songs. There is much that can be learned from these old works and we seek to bring attention to them. Look for this one soon!

4. Book Reviews - This series already exists and will be continued. Expect a new review every month or two!

We are excited about the direction we have been given and our new team member. Blessings be with you all during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays!

Book Review: Knowing God by J.I. Packer

As I was rereading this book to prepare for this review, I was saddened to hear the news of the recent passing of the great author and theologian J.I. Packer. As such, this review feels like a proper way to honor the memory of a man that has delivered the Word to millions worldwide and encouraged countless believers to grow in their faith.  Author: My first introduction to J.I. Packer's work was this book. We were required to read it as members of the student leadership team for my campus ministry, RUF. As I researched his life, I began to realize the massive impact he has had on the global evangelical movement. Despite his membership in the Anglican Church, he sought to strengthen Christians of all denominations.  While I have personally never read any of his works outside of Knowing God, I can say that any book he has written is a good choice. Though I don't think any are as fundamental to the Christian life as Knowing God, I think if you are looking for a book by a reputabl...

I Know God is Gracious, But What Is Grace?

I, like all Christians around the world, know that God is abundant in grace. However, until recently, I couldn’t begin to tell you anything about grace. In modern Christianity, grace has become a buzzword that has lost it’s meaning due to overuse (and misuse). So what is it? Why does God show it to us? Why does it matter? Grace can be simply defined as “the unmerited favor of God.” However, there is much, much deeper meaning that you have to feel before you can understand grace. God’s grace is revealed to us by His word and the death and subsequent resurrection of His son Jesus Christ. Similarly,  agape is one of many Greek words for love, but it represents the deepest form of love. You feel it deep within your heart and soul. God’s agape love and grace are two parts of his divine character. In fact, His deep, reckless love for us is the reason he shows us grace. “Grace is cool and all, but why is it important?” Several of you are probably asking this question. Let me expla...

Who am I?

Before I begin to spill my thoughts, experiences and wisdom (hopefully), I think it is important for me to introduce myself. I, like the previous eight generations of my family, was born and raised in the beautiful mountains of eastern Kentucky (specifically a township called Zelda; Google it if you don’t believe it is a real place). I was fortunate enough to be born into a family with a strong connection to the church. My grandmother’s family had built the church I attended in my youth and I had what many would consider a “normal” childhood. My parents imparted to me the knowledge of God, His son Jesus Christ, His sacrifice and His love, grace and mercy. However, my knowledge stayed in my brain and never traveled to my heart. When I transitioned to college,I allowed my heart to grow cold and tried to separate myself from God and His people. Because of God’s reckless love, He sought me, one of His lost sheep, and brought me back to the flock. This flock for me came in the form of Re...
